THE DIAMOND GUIDE

THE DIAMOND 4C'S

Every diamond, like a human fingerprint, has certain distinguishing characteristics. The 4Cs - cut, clarity, colour and carat weight - are the globally accepted standards for assessing the quality of a diamond.

CUT

The cut goes beyond the shape of the diamond, this is where the expertise of sparkle comes to life.

The cut is the most important factor when releasing the beauty of your diamond. An expertly cut diamond of perfect proportion, symmetry and polish interacts perfectly with the light and creates that famed sparkle that can catch your eye across a room.

CLARITY

Diamonds are as unique as snowflakes with no two being the same; these characteristics are part of their make-up and dictate a diamond's clarity.

Diamond clarity explainedDiamond clarity explained

When we look at the clarity of a diamond, we refer to the natural inclusions and blemishes which may be found on a gemstone. Diamonds are natural and due to the intense conditions under which they are created, they all contain inclusions (internal) and blemishes (surface). A diamond does not have to be flawless to be beautiful; it’s all about the type, size, colour and location of these imperfections that determine its clarity.

All Baker Brothers diamonds have clarity from Flawless to Si1, but unlike most, we inspect every diamond we use to ensure that the inclusions are not detrimental to a diamond’s sparkle and durability.

COLOUR

Visible to the naked eye, diamond colour refers to the natural tint inherent in white diamonds.

CARAT

Carat denotes the weight of a diamond, not the size.

It’s important to remember that carat weight can appear differently depending on the shape of the diamond, such as round brilliant, princess, pear, oval, cushion, marquise, emerald, radiant or heart. A diamond can have a higher carat weight without appearing larger and two diamonds of the same carat weight can vary in size depending on their cut.
